TfL to furlough thousands of staff

i, Saturday and Sunday 25-26 April 2020, #2,939, p15

Why did this article catch your attention?

This article caught my attention because 7,000 Transport for London (TfL) employees have had their hours cut or furloughed because of the financial impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

How would this affect the 7,000 Transport for London employees?

There are pros and cons to this.

Even though Transport for London are losing out financially, the 7,000 TfL employees would have more time to stay at home and stay safe. The employees should also still be paid with the help of the Government.

On the flip side, I would definitely be concerned mental health issues on this, as mental health is a big thing and should be looked after correctly.

Who else would be affected?

There are still people out there who would be affected by Transport for London furloughing and reducing hours. They include, but aren’t limited to:

Passengers – Those who are classed as ‘Key Workers’ may need public transport to get to and from work, but without as many TfL employees, public transport would be reduced dramatically. This would cause issues between the ‘Key Workers’ and their employers.

Shoppers – Again, there are shoppers who do not have their own transportation and would rely on public transport to get them to and from places like supermarkets for essential shopping, like food. If you have purchased frozen food, would you be happy waiting for 30 minutes for a bus or a train? How about an hour? That is what happened in my town.

I am one of the Transport for London employees. With all of this free time, what can I do to keep myself busy?

I would say not to worry too much because there is always something to do, especially at home, like gardening and housework, shopping (online if you are in the high risk category) or cooking. That’s just to name a few.

As a ‘Key Worker’ at DPD through A-One Recruitment, I saw things go through their doors like paint, flowers, gaming chairs, and many more products. Maybe these could give you more idea on what you could do at home.
