Streetwise: Friday 02 November 2018

I walked in at 04:00 after waiting for about 15 minutes as I got there early again and I helped set up the warehouse for the shift, then went with a few colleagues for a quick smoke before the parcels and packages came in from the first trailer, which was parked up outside of the warehouse.

The guy in charge called for us to come in, then he had a bleat at me and the other new guy who started the same day as I did for having a quick smoke when we should have been working. Then he spoke to the other colleagues in Romanian, which sounded like a big argument, so I took a couple of big steps back.

The parcels and packages came in and after they were scanned by the guy in charge, I worked with the ones that were on my side of the non-functional conveyor belt, reading each postcode, walked over to the correct cages and carefully placing the parcels and packages into those cages. The first trailer was tipped, scanned and carefully placed into the correct cages by 05:10, then I went out with other colleagues for a smoke (or a few haha).

The second trailer arrived at just after 06:00, which was completed pretty quickly, then I did some general housekeeping (sweeping, picking up rubbish, etc.) before using a pump truck to place the empty cages into the correct places for the day shift(s).

I had to hang around for the guy in charge to see what he wanted me to do next, but he couldn’t be easily located, so another colleague who spoke English said I could go home and I left at 08:16.
