My Time as a General Labourer at Fawkes & Reece

Introduction

I accepted the temporary position and settled in and adapted extremely quickly, as I had worked on the same site previously, with another Recruitment Agency. As the work progressed quickly, it did not take me long to familiarise myself.

I continued building rapport with colleagues and other trades, and developed and established rapport with those who were not on the site previously.

The Job at Hand

I performed various tasks that were required of me, where I clarified each task to know what was expected of me. I also prioritised my workload to make it a productive day.

I inspected and assessed parts of the site I was working at, and addressed health and safety issues, where I informed site management.

I assisted colleagues and other trades, when required to do so.

I continued to demonstrate that I could still transport full sheets of plasterboard to any floor of each building.

I organised skips, where I stacked them with waste, to be able to fit more in.

Issues

The main issue I witnessed was when a number of Assistant Site Managers kept asking me to complete other tasks whilst I was in the middle of completing more important tasks.

Blogging

Analysed, evaluated, recorded and summarised daily tasks and duties.

When I had completed that, I created, compiled, composed and prepared blog posts before I scheduled and published those blog posts onto my blog in a logical order.

Publicised and promoted my blog posts to both LinkedIn and Twitter.

Key Competencies

Teamwork: Fawkes & Reece

On several occasions, deliveries of plasterboard and dust arrived late during my shifts.

I need to work as part of a team together with another colleague to complete the delivery as quickly as possible.

I was informed about the delivery by my Manager, then I went to find my colleague and let him know about the delivery arriving late and needing to be completed before the end of the shift. Both back to where the delivery was dropped off at, and started with their heavier products first to make it easier for both of us.

We completed the deliveries quickly and, on each occasion, we were able to go home early, as we had finished.

[RE-POST] Leadership: A-One Recruitment

This is a re-post of Leadership: A-One Recruitment, which was published on Saturday 03 September 2022 at 08:00.

A new DPD Depot was due to open in Sittingbourne, and we at DPD Gatwick were asked to train the Sittingbourne team.

I needed to train 2 of the Sittingbourne ten, remaining visible and approachable to both of them.

I was introduced to the Sittingbourne team and was padded 2 of the Sittingbourne colleague to train. I introduced myself and asked if they had die any warehouse work before and redirected and valued their experiences. I explained and shutter them what they needed to do and I let then know that I was open to questions.

I successfully trained both of the Sittingbourne colleagues, who cottoned on very quickly. I remained visible and approachable the whole time. I also displayed passion and enthusiasm for the work, which rubbed off on them and I respected them. The work was completed quickly and successfully.

Blogging and more … or less

With a baby on the way, with about a month and a half remaining, I have found it a massive struggle to get both blogging and my job search completed. So please accept my apologies and bear with me whilst I try to sort may more interesting blog posts.

Though it has been a real struggle, especially with all the baby appointments, I have been doing what I can.

I will continue with re-posts and puzzles (Sundials and Word Wheels) as normal, covering 2 weeks per month. I will even attempt to get more Key Competencies completed, but I will need massive help with this.

I attempted to get help before in regards to Key Competencies, but that failed, as hardly anybody knew what Key Competencies were. I was so puzzled.

I have decided to complete even more research on what I can post on my blog for you, my amazing readers.

If any of you have any ideas, I would really appreciate it!

What Have I Done In May 2023?

After having a decent stint of employment last month, which has it’s own struggles, it has still been a struggle with my job search again, but I have been doing what I can do where my job search is concerned.

Mental health of a loved one will never go away, which has been making it really difficult to find suitable employment. I have been going with my fiancée to hospital and GP trips for our ever growing baby, as well as the odd hospital visit for mental health and helping her to calm her down, it has been extremely difficult.

Without further adieu, here is what I have done during May 2023:

Employment

I managed to secure 1 more day’s worth of employment at the beginning of May 2023, but I am still determined enough to get more employment in Construction.

Blogging

I typed and scheduled 114 blog posts during May 2023.

LinkedIn

I posted 89 post on LinkedIn, as well as 3 comments and 2 likes.

Plus, we found out that we are expecting a bundle of joy, a baby.

Without further adieu, here is what I have done during April 2023:

Employment

I managed to secure 15 day’s worth of employment throughout April 2023, but I am still determined enough to get more employment in Construction.

Blogging

I typed and scheduled 75 blog posts during april 2023, as well as handwrote 5 blog posts.

General Job Search

It may look like I have not completed a lot of job search this month, but I am still trying to do my best to get somewhere.

Other job search tasks included:

  • Picked up and went through 1 magazine.

LinkedIn

I posted 66 post on LinkedIn, as well as 14 comments and 9 likes.

Initiative: Paramount

We were due painters in for the commercial property.

To use my initiative to move / transport useable products away from the walls.

I went along the interior walls to see what there was near the walls to see where there was both a lot of useable products and heavy useable products were. I then first moved / transported the heavy products away from the interior walls. Afterwards, I went clockwise, starting where there was a lot of products. I then swept the area, going clockwise.

I made space for the Painters to paint the walls, using my own initiative.

My fiancée had a loss in her family and she was struggling massively.

I needed to work out a way to complete the work, whilst grieving and helping my fiancée grieve.

I spoke to my Site Manager and explained the situation, then I listened to what he suggested.

The Site Manager let me leave early for a couple days, then let me take the rest of the week off, paid.

Company Hunt: May 2021 (Conclusion)

This series of Company Hunts was not only draining for me, but also caused frustration, especially nearer the final couple of days. I feel that this series of Company Hunts was average, as I have had some really good days and some really bad days. So, come up without further adieu, let’s take a look back at what information I received over the last week and a half:

  • 14 names of people confirmed that I can (and will) contact.
  • 6 names I had from previous Company Hunts no longer work at the companies.
  • 13 companies gave me the full names of the relevant people.
  • 5 companies slgave me the first name of the relevant people.
  • Two companies in full moon that they have a “No Name Policy”
  • 1 company was unsure the relevant person.

Here’s what else happened:

  • 6 companies no vacancies available come on one of which told me to keep an eye on their website for jobs.
  • 1 other company told me to go online.
  • 1 company wanted me to take my CV in personally.
  • 1 generic e-mail address.
  • 2 companies came back as unknown.
  • 13 telephone numbers kept ringing.
  • 10 telephone numbers were unrecognised.

What Next?

I have a lot to do now, including:

  • To gather correct addresses for the 14 names that were confirmed and for the 13 companies who gave me the full names of the relevant people.
  • To use LinkedIn to research employees for the 2 companies who had a “No Name Policy” and call them back to confirm the relevant names.
  • To research alternative telephone numbers for the 10 telephone numbers that were unrecognised and give them a call.
  • To call the 13 telephone numbers that kept ringing.

Key Competencies

  • Being Well Informed: I was informed of the occasional vacancies, as well as several names I am able to contact.
  • Communication Skills: I asked relevant questions to help me find the information I needed, where I listened and took notes. I thanked everybody at the end of every conversation for their time.
  • Customer Service: I was polite and professional when making these telephone calls.
  • Decision Making: I decided to complete this company Hunt and the order I made the calls.
  • Initiative: I planned and executed this Company Hunt on my own, without anybody asking me to to or watching over me.
  • Organisational Skills: After I decided to complete this Company Hunt, I organised the companies I wanted to call into a suitable order. By the end of this Company Hunt, I also organised who I need to contact, and how.
  • Research: I was able to find out and gather several names of relevant people to send my CV to or send a letter to in regards to leads.
  • Results & Target Orientated: Even though I didn’t get a job out of this series of Company Hunt, I did receive enough information (names, etc.) for me to deal with.
  • Stress Management: I hate making and receiving calls as it does stress me out, as well as mentally drain me enough that I want to fall asleep. To manage this, I take a 5 minute break after every sixth call or so.
  • Time Management: I set the goal to complete this Company Hunt before calling the companies and concluded each part of the series at the end of each blog post. I then completed a bigger conclusion at the very end.
  • Writing: I took note of the responses from companies and handwrote blog posts about this series of Company Hunts.
