[RE-POST] Day 6: Christmas Merchandising Temporary Job (23/12/17)

This is a re-post of Day 6: Christmas Merchandising Temporary Job (23/12/17), which was published on Tuesday 02 January 2018 at 15:00.

What were you doing on your shift?

Like all shifts I have completed, I was doing replenishment of shelves.

I was placed on pasta and pet food aisles.

How do you think it went? Why?

We all know how bulky both pasta and pet food can be bulky and heavy.

All in all this shift was the best shift, as I felt I achieved much more than I have done on previous night shifts.

When will your next shift be?

This was my last shift, as this merchandising position was only a temporary position.

[RE-POST] Day 5: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (22/12/17)

This is a re-post of Day 5: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (22/12/17), which was published on Tuesday 02 January 2018 at 12:00.

What were you doing on your shift?

For this shift, I was with one of my team on crisps.

How do you think it went? Why?

Being a Team Leader, I found it harder on this shift, as one or two of my staff suddenly slowed down for a little while. However, I managed to help them get back to speed by offering to help place products under the correct places.

Apart from that, it went really well and I was satisfied with the amount of work we did as a team.

When will your next shift be?

My last 11 hour shift will start at 8pm that night.

[RE-POST] Day 4: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (21/12/17)

This is a re-post of Day 4: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (21/12/17), which was published on Tuesday 02 January 2018 at 09:00.

What were you doing on your shift?

Like yesterday, I was merchandising crisps.

However, my night was made better because I became Team Leader, leading my team to the best of my ability.

I encouraged my team to get all merchandising tasks completed with time on the shift to spare, ready for the store to be opened.

How do you think it went? Why?

Taking in to consideration that I have only had two weeks’ supervisory experience, I was excited and pleased that I was given the Team Leader position.

I continued working hard with my part of the merchandising to complete my tasks.

When will your next shift be?

My next shift was at 8pm that evening and I could not wait.

[RE-POST] Day 3: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (20/12/17)

This is a re-post of Day 3: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (20/12/17), which was published on Monday 01 January 2018 at 18:00.

What were you doing on your shift?

On this shift, I was placed on the crisps aisles, which was easy, but was very fiddly in places, especially with the smaller packets if crisps

How do you think it went? Why?

As I mentioned in my last answer, some of the packets of crisps were very fiddly because there were some smaller packets.

However, it was fun with the multi packs. They kept falling as the shelves were metal, but I made sure that they were secure / safe on the shelves.

When will your next shift be?

My next shift was at 8pm that day for another amazing 11 hour shift.

[RE-POST] Day 2: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (18/12/17)

This is a re-post of Day 2: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (18/12/17), which was published on Monday 01 January 2018 at 15:00.

What were you doing on your shift?

Like my last shift, I was doing replenishment of shelves in the Alcohol aisle and in the Free From aisle.

With the alcohol being sold at £10+, I tagged each bottle.

How do you think it went? Why?

It was still a challenge as it was night work, but I was getting used to doing night work, but I was enjoying the position.

When will your next shift be?

My next shift will be Wednesday night at 8pm for another 11 hours.

Posted in Communication skills, Companies, Crawley, Customer Service, Initiative, Job Roles, Organisational, Problem Solving, Replenishment, Result and Target Oriented, Sainsbury's, Seasonal Staff, Skills, Teamwork

[RE-POST] Day 1: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (17/12/17)

This is a re-post of Day 1: Temporary Christmas Merchandising Job (17/12/17), which was published on Monday 01 January 2018 at 12:00.

Where is this position based?

This position was based at Sainsbury’s in West Green, Crawley, just off the A23.

Who did you meet on your first ever night shift?

I met many amazing staff from Sainsbury’s and MSS.

Six members of staff from MSS were doing the same temporary position that I was doing.

What were you doing on your shift?

I was merchandising stock from cages and pallets onto the correct shelving, which include alcohol and Free From.

How do you think it went? Why?

I am not going to lie, but it was a major challenge for me as it was my first shift working nights, which I have not done before.

It definitely killed me, but wanted to do much, much more.

When will your next shift be?

My next shift will be tonight at 8pm for another 11 hours.

What skills do you think you used?

communicated with the store manager and other Sainsbury’s staff to see which aisle(s) they wanted to place me.

I feel I used a methodical approach to this position, as I placed each product at the bottom (on the floor) of where they needed to be placed on the shelves.

Then I opened and stacked the products into the correct places on the shelves quickly, abiding to Health and Safety and making sure there were no gaps, using my keen eye for detail.

Why did you complete a Company Hunt in Manor Royal on Tuesday 23 August 2022?

With me having a gap in my construction employment, it was about time that I went on another Company Hunt, first in a while.

Where did you visit in Manor Royal?

I visited only a small amount of companies today instead of a huge amount over one main road and the small roads off of it. Here’s a list of roads I passed through:

  • Priestly Way
  • Raleigh Court
  • Rutherford Way

What companies did you visit in Manor Royal?

I visited 34 companies on this Company Hunt, including:

  • A1 Anodising
  • Anise Caterin
  • Auto Logic
  • Barker & Stonehouse
  • BP Insulations
  • Central Garage Doors
  • Crawley Martial Arts Academy
  • Document Options / Lollipop

  • Trans Data Management
  • Vistec Systems
  • VPPLC
  • Wave Office
  • YB Planting Ltd.

What companies had vacancies & how would I apply?

Only two companies mentioned or shown that they have any vacancies available.

17 companies said that they had no vacancies available. Of which, Robyn’s & Day let me know to check out their website, I gave my e-mail address to one company, another uses Indeed to advertise jobs and another mentioned they have had to make redundancies.

I received 4 e-mail address to e-mail my CV to, one gave me a telephone number to call and 2 uses Job Boards to advertise their jobs.

7 companies were non-responders, of which I found telephone numbers for 4 of these companies for me to call another time.

Conclusion

I am a little surprised that there were only 2 jobs available on this Company Hunt. However, I am more surprised that there were only a small amount on non-responders from this Company Hunt, as I was expecting a fair amount more not answering their doors.

What Next?

The main next step for me would be to call the companies I received telephone numbers for, and I will be doing this on Tuesday 30 August 2022.

The next step for me would be to send e-mails to the companies I am suited to, accompanied with a CV and cover letter.

I will also take a look at the websites that I received, and potentially share this with potential candidates.

My Time as a Volunteer Office Worker at ALC

Introduction

I built, established an excellent rapport with other employees and volunteers

The Job at Hand

I dealt with clients in a professional, but friendly manner, excellent Customer Service skills.

I analysed, assessed and examined CV’s for clients, where I advised and addressed issues their CV’s had. Then I corrected and edited CV’s to a much improved standard. I have had to build new CV’s for clients in some cases.

From there, I guided, motivated and recommended clients to apply for suitable employment in the local area.

Issues

I did have to deal an argument between with 2 clients, who were arguing over the use of a laptop. More can be found on my Conflict Resolution post.

I regularly met people who were also actively seeking new employment opportunities or in the same boat as me. I saw opportunities where both parties could help each other in their respective job search.

I needed to help those in the same boat add me to find suitable employment.

I found out what types of work or industry they were interested in and hire they go about applying for this types of jobs. I asked if I could take notes, just in case I am able to help. Generally, they agreed, so I took notes on their answers. I also took notes on what they said that I could adapt to. I asked other relevant questions to get more information and clarified what they said.

By the time they finished talking, I had at least one idea for them, which I suggested to them. They always appreciated my help.

As a volunteer at Revive, there was always alot to do, which included getting donated products priced, steamed (for clothes) and onto the shop floor quickly, ready for sale.

I had to work as part of a team to complete all tasks by deadlines.

I was asked to put donations onto the shop floor whilst other volunteers were doing the steaming and pricing. I picked up several products at a time and placed the products in the correct places on the shop floor. I also dealt with customers during this process, which I did not mind.

Not only were all the tasks completed quickly and effectively, more products were sold, making a profit. I helped towards improving the good working environment and we learned new skills from each other, as well as gaining and developing socially.

Company Hunt: May 2021 (Conclusion)

This series of Company Hunts was not only draining for me, but also caused frustration, especially nearer the final couple of days. I feel that this series of Company Hunts was average, as I have had some really good days and some really bad days. So, come up without further adieu, let’s take a look back at what information I received over the last week and a half:

  • 14 names of people confirmed that I can (and will) contact.
  • 6 names I had from previous Company Hunts no longer work at the companies.
  • 13 companies gave me the full names of the relevant people.
  • 5 companies slgave me the first name of the relevant people.
  • Two companies in full moon that they have a “No Name Policy”
  • 1 company was unsure the relevant person.

Here’s what else happened:

  • 6 companies no vacancies available come on one of which told me to keep an eye on their website for jobs.
  • 1 other company told me to go online.
  • 1 company wanted me to take my CV in personally.
  • 1 generic e-mail address.
  • 2 companies came back as unknown.
  • 13 telephone numbers kept ringing.
  • 10 telephone numbers were unrecognised.

What Next?

I have a lot to do now, including:

  • To gather correct addresses for the 14 names that were confirmed and for the 13 companies who gave me the full names of the relevant people.
  • To use LinkedIn to research employees for the 2 companies who had a “No Name Policy” and call them back to confirm the relevant names.
  • To research alternative telephone numbers for the 10 telephone numbers that were unrecognised and give them a call.
  • To call the 13 telephone numbers that kept ringing.

Key Competencies

  • Being Well Informed: I was informed of the occasional vacancies, as well as several names I am able to contact.
  • Communication Skills: I asked relevant questions to help me find the information I needed, where I listened and took notes. I thanked everybody at the end of every conversation for their time.
  • Customer Service: I was polite and professional when making these telephone calls.
  • Decision Making: I decided to complete this company Hunt and the order I made the calls.
  • Initiative: I planned and executed this Company Hunt on my own, without anybody asking me to to or watching over me.
  • Organisational Skills: After I decided to complete this Company Hunt, I organised the companies I wanted to call into a suitable order. By the end of this Company Hunt, I also organised who I need to contact, and how.
  • Research: I was able to find out and gather several names of relevant people to send my CV to or send a letter to in regards to leads.
  • Results & Target Orientated: Even though I didn’t get a job out of this series of Company Hunt, I did receive enough information (names, etc.) for me to deal with.
  • Stress Management: I hate making and receiving calls as it does stress me out, as well as mentally drain me enough that I want to fall asleep. To manage this, I take a 5 minute break after every sixth call or so.
  • Time Management: I set the goal to complete this Company Hunt before calling the companies and concluded each part of the series at the end of each blog post. I then completed a bigger conclusion at the very end.
  • Writing: I took note of the responses from companies and handwrote blog posts about this series of Company Hunts.

Company Hunt: May 2021 (Part 7)

Introduction

This is Part 7 of a series of Company Hunts, which I decided and planned on Wednesday 05 May 2021.

Why did you complete a Company Hunt on Friday 14 May 2021?

The main reason why I completed this Company Hunt on Friday 14 may 2021 was to find and get back into suitable employment the best way I can, under the circumstances.

As I do not have a laptop or internet we and with coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, calling companies to gather names is the best option to find suitable employment and hunt down leads.

What companies did you contact on this Company Hunt?

For Friday 14 May 2021, I contacted the following companies:

  • Electric Center
  • Eurocell Crawley
  • Eurostan Ltd
  • Evans Cycles
  • Formula One Auto Centre
  • Genesis
  • Glenn Freight
  • Ifield Golf & County Club
  • Interparcel Ltd
  • Iron Mountain UK Ltd
  • JA Autos

What vacancies were available from this Company Hunt?

I received a first name from Formula One Autocentre and a full name from Ifield Golf and Country Club. The employee at Electric Centre informed me, to save me time, they had nothing in the way of vacancies.

The telephone number I had for Interparcel Ltd was unrecognised and both telephone numbers for Genesis were also unrecognised.

Eurostan Ltd let that telephone number rain. Eurocell Crawley, Evans Cycles and Glenn Freight all had two telephone numbers each, all of which kept ringing. JA Autos came back as unknown for something and Iron Mountain UK Ltd kept me on hold for over 7 minutes.

Conclusion

This Company Hunt was shockingly horrendous.

I thought yesterday’s Company Hunt was the worst company I completed, but I was wrong on that, as today’s Company Hunt is now the worst to date.

To have so many companies not onto the telephones he’s beyond concerning and extremely frustrating for me. Moreso, as I actually want to be working.

The best thing I am going to do is keep trying to get through to them and the best thing for the companies to do is pick up their telephones, as I could have been a potential customer. The next best thing for companies is to have an announcement about opening hours and alternative contact details throughout the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

With Thanks

I would like to thank everybody who actually picked up their telephone and helped me on today’s Company Hunt by answering my questions in regards to employment and gathering names.

I really do appreciate your help!

Thank you!

Company Hunt: May 2021 (Part 6)

Introduction

This is Part 6 of a series of Company Hunts, which I decided and planned on Wednesday 05 May 2021.

Why did you complete a Company Hunt on Thursday 13 May 2021?

The main reason why I completed this Company Hunt on Thursday 13 May 2021 was to find and get back into suitable employment the best I can under the circumstances.

I do not have a laptop or internet and with a coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, calling companies is the best option to find suitable employment and hunt down leads.

What companies did you contact on this Company Hunt?

For Thursday 13 May 2021, I contacted the following companies:

  • BOC Gases
  • Bodyworks Chiropractic
  • Business Post Ltd
  • Cabtech
  • CAE Gatwick
  • Camspec
  • Capital Hair & Beauty
  • CCI Gatwick
  • CC Precision Engineering Ltd
  • City Electric Factors Ltd
  • City Sprint

What vacancies were available from this Company Hunt?

This is most probably the worst Company Hunt ever.

I only received 2 full names, from Camspec and CCI Gatwick.

Capital hair and Beauty had no vacancies unless one of the employees leaves, but I could check online for vacancies in other branches. City Electrical Factors Ltd asked me to send my CV to a generic company email address.

3 calls went into answerphone with a possible name for BOC Gases. A second telephone number for CC Precision Engineering Ltd was called and was unrecognised. The telephone numbers for Bodyworks, Cabtech and CAE Gatwick were all unrecognised, and would be my fault for not checking an updating my records.

When I attempted to call Business Post Ltd, it came back as call ended thrice.

Conclusion

I am happy that I was able to retrieve 2 names to contact about vacancies, but I will have to do some research on both companies to see what they actually do.

I am frustrated at 3 calls went into answerphone, as I feel that I am wasting my time calling these companies. I appreciate that not everybody is back in the office yet due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, but having an announcement or recorded message to explain that the company is closed or when the person will be back in the office would be highly beneficial.

With Thanks

I would like to thank everybody who picked up the telephones and helped me on today’s Company Hunt by answering my questions in regards to employment and gathering names.

I really do appreciate your help!

Thank you!

Company Hunt: May 2021 (Part 5)

Introduction

This is Part 5 of a series of Company Hunts, which I decided and planned on Wednesday 05 May 2021.

Why did you complete a Company Hunt on Wednesday 12 May 2021?

The main reason why I completed this Company Hunt on Wednesday 12 May 2021 was to find and get back into suitable employment.

As I do not have a laptop or internet and with the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, calling companies is the best option to find suitable employment and hunt down leads.

What companies did you contact on this Company Hunt?

For Wednesday 12 May 2021, I contacted the following companies:

  • Aerotron Ltd
  • Ballpoint Office Supplies
  • Barrington Lodge
  • BSS
  • Buck & Hickman
  • Caterham Cars
  • Euro Car Parts Crawley
  • Halfords
  • Heating Plumbing Supplies (HPS)
  • Rexel
  • Vent-Axia
  • Vines of Gatwick BMW

What vacancies were available from this Company Hunt?

Like I have done over the last week, I completed this Company Hunt to gather names for who I should contact about vacancies, so it was not vacancies per se. Well, not directly anyway.

Any companies within industries I am not interested in, I could potentially attempt to gather leads.

Ballpoint Office Supplies, Caterham Cars, Euro Car Parts Crawley and Vent-Axia all have me full names of the relevant person for each company. Vines of Gatwick BMW confirmed a name I received previously.

Aerotron and Buck & Hickman both did not have any vacancies available, but Aerotron gave me a generic email address to send my CV to.

BSS claimed that they have vacancies available and explain that I needed to go to the Travis Perkins website to apply. Halfords requested to go in store to retrieve the Store Manager’s name. Heating Plumbing Supplies supplied their head office address.

Barrington Lodge and Rexel both let their telephones ring.

Conclusion

A really good turn out and excellent result today.

I am excited that I received 4 names and confirmed another.

I do appreciate that the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has affected not only everybody in general, but companies too. However, I am getting very concerned that companies let their telephones keep ringing. I feel that I have a solution these companies … Have a recorded announcement with the times you are actually open or an alternative telephone number people can call. This is more out of courtesy.

With Thanks

I would like to thank everybody who picked up their telephones today and helped me by answering my questions in regards to employment and gathering names.

I really do appreciate your help!

Thank you!
