Duchess of Cambridge’s jeweller teeters on brink

Links of London
Daily Mail, Monday, March 18,2019, p64

Why did this article catch your attention?

This article caught my attention because Links of London is very close to collapsing, putting 500 jobs at risk of redundancy.

How would this affect the 500 Links of London employees?

This would affect the 500 Links of London employees financially, mentally and physically. The 500 employees are close to being made redundant and would have to claim Universal Credit (unemployment benefits) if Links of London collapse, which would be a financial loss until they have found alternative employment. They may also have to borrow money and be in debt.

Actively seeking new employment is a full time job in itself, so its mentally and physically different from actually working for a company.

Who else would be affected?

It’s not just the 500 employees who would be affected though, right? Here’s a list of others who would be affected:

Customers – Customers, like the Duchess of Cambridge, would either have to travel to a completely different jeweller or order jewellery online for the products they are looking for.

Employees’ families – They may have to lend money to them.

The Government – If Links of London collapses, the Government would not receive any taxes from both Links of London or any of the 500 employees. This would also mean that the Government would also have to pay out Universal Credit at just over £300 per month. For 500 people, based on £300 per month, that would cost the Government £150,000 per month.

I am one of the 500 affected employees. What can I do to seek alternative employment?

I have never been a jeweller, but I have applied speculatively to a jeweller in my town by giving them my updated CV, along with a Cover Letter.

A CV Drop (or speculative approach) is an excellent way of seeking new employment. It shows you are outgoing and more determined to find suitable employment.

But be sure that you do a Company Hunt (research the employer) beforehand.
